A {Welcomed} Entry

A {Welcomed} Entry
How do you welcome guests in your home?
What is the first thing a visitor sees when they enter your house?
Does it welcome?
In our home, we enjoy a comfortably, eclectic mix of urban & country...
...provided by the decor sensibilities of artist & farmer.
Here are two of our {Entries} and a few ideas to help you
Welcome Guests into yours.
***
Entry ways are the first part of your home visitors see.
For this reason {Entries} should be neat, stylish & welcoming.
Being the first area of the home entered, unfortunately, creates the the tendency, at least in our home,
 for this room to become a catch-all of people's junk.
The kid's school bags, coats, and shoes can ALWAYS be found here.
Brent's work gloves, are usually, here too.
One of Jamie's purses and at least two of her school bags {teaching=baggage} are dropped as she enters the door.
(Unless they make it to the dining room table the other inevitable catch-all in our house)
We are lucky that directly off the back entry of our home, is a large walk in closet where we can put the above mess and shut the door so that our back entry usually looks like this...
{The Back Entry... a little bit country & farmer}
Our back {country} entrance is the commonly used entrance by most family & friends.
This is the work-horse entrance that greets three children home from school & in from farm explorations, fort building & chores.
This is the entrance that sends the farmer & artist off to work each day and embraces us when we finish a days work.
It's the honey I'm home entrance...
...and there is no place like our HOME!
In our back entry we often try to have a plant or two to great family & friends with a little life.
We also have a carved log chair in our entry that is definitely a statement piece, as well as, a great place to sit & put on or take of shoes.
These are two of our recommendations for creating a welcomed entry {found below}
***
In our entry we have a sign that Jamie {MADE}...
by adding a coat of BHG, antique white colored paint to an old sign board...
and adding vinyl letters placed on top that read...
"Welcome friends & family"
How is that for being obvious?
{Don't forget to create a welcomed Entry outside too}
 The exterior entrance of the your home is also a great place to add a welcoming feel with decor.
We love seasonal decorating, and my exterior entrances all reflect the current decor.
The photo above is the back {country} entry to the farm...
Decorated for spring with bright, colorfully-bold, greenery that says to guests...happy spring
This wreath was won for free.
Decor that has no cost = happy Steffls.
We hope this entry says, "Welcome to our happy HOME!"
***
{The Front Entry... a little urban & artist}
The front entry is somewhat stark in contrast to the back country entry in that guests are greeted only with an original abstract mixed-media painting, created by Jamie.
We have a large closet here that helps hide the inevitable clutter.  Storage is a must in an entry! We are blessed to have the space to store items out of sight.
We let the finishes of this space do the talking.
Again, as stated in other posts, still not loving this tan wall color,
 chosen to match the brick... which we eventually painted white (arghhh).
Thinking it would be more farm fabulous in a white shade or greiges?
For now it stays.
In our {urban} entry we see...
Our beautiful barn door which you can read about here.
The barn door is art to us & is an {Entry} to the master bedroom which you can read about here.
This is one of our major pieces of art inside the foyer.
We have a built-in ledger board that acts as a shelf for a few of our favorite pieces...
•A framed banana leaf print from our honeymoon to the Caribbean.
•An antique vent cover, bamboo for luck
•Two antique scribes
•Two Y's for printmaking???
&
•Another green {vintage} bottle as decor. This one is for chilling wine...
For Our Front Entry a New Door...
To Greet & Welcome.

{Don't forget to created a welcomed Entry outside too}
The front entry, decorated with a wintry mix of greenery, cut from the farm & created by Jamie...
...using a thrifted horn and clearance ribbon...
{farm fabulous frugality}.
{Tips}
 To Create A Welcomed Entry in your home
 1. Clean out & De-clutter.
The entry is about entering.  It should be beautiful & set the stage for the rest of your home.  Get rid of anything that serves no purpose.  If you have many items stored in your entry or entry closets try to find a different storage area to put them. The entry below is to die for and a perfect example of beautifully minimal.

2. Include a place to sit near an entry.
An entry should have a place to sit for guests and family members to take off shoes if needed.  There are so many options for decorative furniture that can serve as seating.  Have fin searching for that perfect entry bench at a thrift store, antique shop or online at places like www.westelm.com
via Pinterest
3.Make it all about storage.
This amazing piece of furniture was created by Erin at a Charming Nest.  Check out this great DIY blog for some other great ideas for the budget minded.  Erin actually shows you exactly how to build and paint this with built-in via IKEA furniture and parts from your local DIY box store.
 4. Practice minimalism.
Carefully choose artwork for your entry because that one piece sets the tone for your entire home. Select furniture accents that complement the art.

5. Make form follow function.
   Any furniture piece or built in should serve a purpose. These purposes should be Beautiful but their main function should be storage & organization.
When we remodel the kitchen...This will be my inspiration for our back mudroom, minus the chandeliers which are too fussy for this farm.
It is time to make an EXIT!

{Our Room}... is Just About Done!

{Our Room}... is Just About Done!
The {Master} Bedroom
When we moved to the farm...
We decided to turn, what was once a formal living room...
Into a Master Bedroom.
We are just about finished.
This is how it looks.
{So far...}
...and used many of their decor items as {INSPIRATION} for our design.
We are however, on more of a "Hardware Hank" Budget.
So...
Many of our "Restoration" like pieces are {FOUND} from around the farm,
thrift & antique stores, as well as, the local Target.
This rope machine was part one of the
{Vintage Tools}
We purchased with the farm tools from Brent's mom.
This rope machine
{from Minneapolis, MN}
reminded us of a similar Restoration Hardware Objêts...
like this book press & gear which retail for over $200.00 each.
We love to {FIND} farm fabulous Objêts
on the farm  for FREE!
Check your garages or sheds for items that can be {RePurposed}into great design.

{Why This Works}
Juxtaposition (an unusual or awkward placement of objects) creates a sense of interest.
In addition to interest, random {found} objects, create a sense of whimsy and contrast to decor... making people want to really {look} at your space.
Most tools or parts are geometric in shape and these basic shapes work well in design.

{Why We Love OUR Rope Machine}
Our bedroom is full of rectangles and squares.
To "soften" things up a bit, we tried to decorate with circular objects & add organic accents.
Rocks, plants, and circular objects counter-balance the geometric architectural angles of the relief wall sculpture above the bed, the architecture print by the mirror and the very "rectangular-ness"
of the bed frame, fireplace brick & wooden floor planks.
In addition to the shape of the rope machine, we love its time worn, rusted patina, which looks lovely against the white, painted, brick backdrop.
Lastly, this rope machine is a Minnesota original, meant for hard work, just like us!
***
We have 2 custom wardrobes {coming soon} to flank the windows and add much needed storage.
We are also trying to decide on window treatments to add some softness to the room.
And, we are still not certain, we love the wall color???
 ***
Enjoy a Few More Shots of {OUR} Just About Done... Master Bedroom.
We can't wait till it is... All Done!
If there ever really is a done in design.

The stop sign reminds us that in this room we stop, relax, and thank God for all our blessings.  The {antique} drawing mannequin is positioned in prayer as it sits and gazes out at our farm.
And, in our room, we have words to remind us...
...to live life fully, & to imagine great things and MAKE THEM REALITY!
God's Blessings,
The Steffls

Happy {SPRING} Saturday

Happy {SPRING} Saturday
There is nothing like a sun-shiny day...
 In spring...
 In Minnesota.
We are busy, busy, busy!
Brent is getting the tractors ready for planting.
&
 Jamie is learning & loving our new camera.
{Check out a few pics below}
Today's post is a few snapshots from our home & farm.
Capturing {SPRING}

We followed our blog post, {Bring Spring Indoors}, & created a bulb garden arrangement
...in a very Easter-ish basket.
 We purchased the basket at an auction, as part of a lot, for a few cents!
It is {frugal} farm fabulousness.
The authentic egg basket was also purchased at an auction and given to us by Brent's Mom.
Auctions are great places to {FIND} decor at unreal prices.
Kerkhoff Auctioneering in Redwood Falls, MN does a nice job...
Check their upcoming sales here.

Love these old numbers on the yard light pole.
May {MAKE} this into a digital print???
Signs & Numbers are {GRAPHIC} & a great way to add contrast and interest to any room's decor.

We have been {SPRING} cleaning & organizing in the kids' rooms.
Every ones drawers were, went through, and cleared of old items that no longer fit.
We will be having a {HUGE} garage sale at Grandma Thorstons in Springfield, MN.
I'll post the date and time once we decide when it will be.
The children's rooms are just about ready to be photographed and shared.
Can't wait...
The rooms look so nice
the kid's thank God each night for their HOME!
It wouldn't be spring on the farm without...
a yard full of mud...
...tractors!
This is our 4-wheel drive tractor, which Jamie thinks, looks like a big toy...
That Brent gets to "play" in all day.

Get {Outside & Enjoy} Spring.

5 Ways to...
Bring Spring In...{doors}...
With Decor

#1 Be {GREEN}
Buy a new potted plant...

It is too cold outside to start planting {out}doors.
So...
Get your {green thumb} ready by adding some...
Life & Spring Indoors...
with potted bulb gardens & plants.

#2 All Things Avian{Birds}
 Add some birds, or eggs, or nests...
Birds are a welcomed Spring symbol especially, here in Minnesota.
To add a touch of spring add a touch of avian.. through textiles, sculptures, or arrangements.

& Eggs via Pottery Barn

#3 Add a Spring Pillow, {or 2, or 3}
 Add a few pillows in pastel or bright punches of color.
Pillows are a textile that easily transform an interior space from season to season.
Pillows also add as sense of comfort to your Home!
So...
For Spring {"feather your nest"} with pillows!

#4 Bring Outdoor Furniture {Indoors}
For a fun way to "Springify" your space... bring an outdoor piece

Maybe you have a wicker chair...Or a beautiful scrolled, iron planter?
Give those outdoor pieces center stage {indoors!}

#5 Decorating With {Vintage} Glass Bottles
 Glass bottles are all the rage in decor especially...
{GREEN}
Vintage bottles.
 {read Decorating With Found Bottles Here}
We recently posted the above article and can't stop seeing vintage bottles in decor magazines & catalogues from Pottery Barn to House Beautiful.
Vintage Bottles are a farm fabulous, fun and {if you know the right place to find them} inexpensive way to bring a touch of spring & whimsy to your decor.
{Our Etsy Store will have them soon...}
Visit the link above in the near future for great farm fabulous decor.

It's Spring & We're Thinking Baseball {Inspired Room}

It's Spring & We're Thinking Baseball...
{Inspired Room}
 We live in Minnesota Twin's Territory {no pun intended, if you know Jamie & Jenny}.
So, when decorating our son's bedroom, we had to pay homage to the home team with a...
Twin's
{Vintage}
Baseball Theme.
Today's post is about Leo's window treatments which were...
Super simple...
cross stitched...
"homer" hanky curtains.
 {Made by Mom & Grandma}
 {How To Make These}
We bought baseball printed gross-grain ribbon...
We collected 6 authentic homer hankies.
{Then}
We strung the ribbon over the window and stretched it tight.
Next, we evenly spaced three hankies on the ribbon and pinned them.
{You could achieve the same effect with pennants or napkins or vintage lace hankies.}
{Then}
Grandma stitched the hankies to the ribbon using...
3 simple cross-stitches at each corner and in the center of the hankies.

 Finished & Fabulous... For under $5.00
